Rio De Janeiro
Day 5
Tuesday, January 6, 2015 Today we went to Christ the Redeemer. It wasn’t as spectacular as I thought it would be. There were so many rude tourists. I could barely take a picture with Christo. Looking at Christ the Redeemer from our hotel roof top was much nicer. It also felt more meaningful looking at it from afar. All of tourists ruined it for me. Jessyca and Cody gave their presentation on Petrobas, the favelas, and pollution in the Guanabara Bay. They went over how in 1973 and 1979 there was an oil crisis, and then 1986 they allowed investment with private firms. Favelas are self-built houses that are all clustered together. They take up 3.5% of the total land in Rio. Pacification is the cleanup of the favelas. As for the pollution in the Guanabara Bay, it mostly comes from the favelas. Rio needs to clean it up for the 2016 Olympics, although they are making efforts, they are not long term efforts and they will probably stop after the Olympics is over. That night we went to a great restaurant hear Copacabana beach. Good food with good people. Tait was being friendly with our waiter, who lives in the favelas. He friended him on Facebook and at the time was telling us that could show us around them. |
Day 4
Monday, January 5, 2015 Harley lost his passport. We went swimming and I got a great tan. THE END No, just kidding. I actually thought this was a great day. We were all pretty tired and needed some rest anyway. This was our first day in Rio, and even though it wasn’t what we expected, it was still a good day. I did in fact get a great a great tan. Our hotel had a roof top pool, which had a great view of Christ the Redeemer and the favelas. Christo looked very powerful from that point of view, up in the clouds. We all bonded a little more on this day, which was good, because we all wanted to get to know each other better. Also, I believe that all of us learned a great lesson on responsibility. All of us need to be more careful when it comes to certain things.
Day 6
Wednesday, January 7, 2015 On this day we went to Chevron to speak to representatives about off shore drilling and the geology of it. The first speaker was very interesting, he told us that 10% of Brazil’s economy is counted for oil and gas. He also spoke about the topography of Rio and Sugar Loaf Mountain. One woman spoke for about an hour on offshore drilling, it was one of the most boring things I’ve ever had to sit through, and after a while I lost her. The last speaker spoke about the biomes in Brazil, that was the most interesting part of the presentation. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel where Renee and Carly gave their presentation on the recreational points of Rio. They told us about Copacabana Beach, Tijuca National Park, and Christ the Redeemer. It was a long, but interesting day. After dinner we went back to the hotel and got ready for bed. We had a long day ahead of us, as our flight for Curitiba left at 9:44 AM the next day. |
